It seems that the handicrafts export of Nepal has not been affected by global financial crisis as the exports for the fiscal year 2008-09 witnessed a growth of 13 percent compared to last year.

During this fiscal year, Nepal exported Rs.3.02 billion of handicraft goods against Rs. 2.6 billion in 2007-08 and which in that fiscal year had slipped by 1.24 percent when corresponded with 2006-07.

The President of Federation of Handicraft Association of Nepal (FHAN) Mr. Pushkar Man Shakya said that this export is mostly supported by the products such as woolen goods, pashmina, Dhaka products, felt products and silver jewelry.

But he said that these exports still are not satisfactory as the industry would have achieved more if it had received government’s support for the export of products by setting at least an export target.

FHAN figures revealed that last year, US imported highest Nepali Handicraft products amounting to Rs. 801.8 million and Germany was the second in importing Rs. 321.2 million worth of goods while UK stood third with imports worth Rs. 235.9 million.

Whereas Japan, which was on third position in the year 2007-08, was fourth this year with the imports of handicraft goods totaling to Rs. 229.7 million and France came fifth with Rs. 185.3 million.
