NEW YORK — Two supermarkets in Brooklyn have agreed to pay back wages to employees totaling $1.125 million after a state investigation found they did not pay some workers at all and paid others less than minimum wage.
The Association Supermarket and the Pioneer Supermarket (formerly a C-Town Supermarket) did not pay their baggers, leaving them to rely solely on tips for income, according to a statement issued by the New York State Attorney General’s Office. In addition, delivery workers were paid less than minimum wage and were not paid overtime.
Under the terms of the settlement last week, the owners and former owners of the supermarkets will pay restitution to over 50 employees, as well as penalties to the state. The current owners of Associated and Pioneer have also agreed to comprehensive monitoring by the Attorney General’s Office, including submitting payroll and time records to the Attorney General’s Office on the first of each month for five years to ensure compliance.
