Sony has confirmed plans to launch an online store that will sell music, movies, books and applications. The virtual marketplace will also allow users to upload videos, photos and other digital content.
According to Sony executive Kazuo Hirai, the new service is expected to be based on the company’s Playstation Network model.
“There’s some debate as to whether all PlayStation Network users would migrate to the new service,” Hirai told Business Week. “We would [certainly] target quite a few of them.”
Hirai explained that PS3 network has been Sony’s most “successful” push into the online commerce market.
Indeed, the PSN has over 33 million registered users and offers thousands of downloadable games, TV shows and movies. In addition, Sony recently signed an agreement with Netflix that allows PSN members to stream movies and other content.
