Facebook goes a step further in the global open web by enabling users in poorer countries to access its platform through a mobile application called 0.Facebook – free of charge.
The new platform is easily manageable as it is optimized for speed.
How it works is that 0.facebook users will be able to use Facebook as on the web, except that pictures will not be viewable but rather one click away. The option for direct viewability is available but “regular data fees will apply”.
Facebook said in a blog post it entered deals with over 50 local operators to deliver the service in “45 countries and territories”.
0.facebook.com is set to be distributed through Telstra in Australia, Movistar in El Salvador, SFR in France, XL in Indonesia, DiGi in Malaysia, Telecom NZ in New Zealand, SMART in the Philippines, Vodafone in Qatar, Digicel in Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, 3 in the UK, and MTN in Cameroon and Guinea Conakry.
At the moment, the social site boasts over 100 million users on mobile devices and is already in partnership with over 200 mobile carriers in 80 countries globally.
